September 2020

President's Pen

By Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP

Hello, IndySHRM!

I'm coming down off the excitement of this year's HR Indiana Conference. And while it looked very different having been delivered in a virtual only format, my HR cup is still quite full. For those of you who registered to attend, you know that you still have access to many of the concurrent sessions for an entire year. I know I'm going to watch a session or two each week until I get through all of them--for over 40 certification credits!

I'm pleased to announce that IndySHRM was selected as Chapter of the Year during the conference! I'm delighted to be a part of an organization with all of you... an organization that strives to advance the HR profession in Central Indiana through comprehensive programming and collaborative development opportunities. What a special honor for our Chapter in such a challenging year, especially!

Finally, as we get closer to Election Day, I want to share with you SHRM National's Election Resource Center. Visit this site to learn more about the legacy of the 19th Amendment (having recently celebrated its 100th anniversary), the importance of voting, and to find tools and resources to help you and your organization navigate state and presidential elections this November.

Warm Regards,

Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP
President, IndySHRM

Board of Directors Spotlight

Suzanne Newcomb, Director of Legislative Affairs

Suzanne Newcomb has been IndySHRM's Director of Legislative Affairs since 2017. This is her final year of her second Board term, and she is an Employment and Labor Attorney for SmithAmundsen LLC.

A skilled litigator, Suzanne’s jury trial experience spans an array of industries including commercial aviation, hotel and hospitality, manufacturing, banking, nonprofit, and the public sector and she vigorously represents clients facing litigation through all phases of the process. However, whenever possible Suzanne uses the insight gained through years of defending businesses facing litigation as well as her earlier experience as a plaintiff’s side employment attorney, to help her clients spot and defuse potential problems before they become litigation. By guiding her clients through complex personnel issues in real time, Suzanne often helps them avoid litigation and quickly return to running their business.

If you'd like to get involved with the Legislative Affairs Committee, please visit the

SHRM Process Change: Introducing Digital SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP Certificates

Effective June 1, 2020, all candidates who pass the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam will receive a digital certificate approximately four (4) weeks after passing their exam. These digital certificates will replace printed certificates that were previously mailed. Candidates will receive an email directing them to the “My Resources” tab in their certification portal to access the electronic PDF file.

While SHRM will no longer be printing certificates, they encourage passers to print and display their digital certificate. Additionally, passers may order a framed certificate or additional collateral through our third-party partner, The Award Group, (fees apply). An email with order instructions will be sent approximately two (2) weeks after score reports are received.

UPDATED – REQUIREMENT CHANGE for PDC-Qualifying Work Projects

The COVID-19 crisis, during which HR professionals are tackling unprecedented challenges on short notice, has prompted SHRM to change the time frame requirement for work projects that qualify for professional development credits (PDCs) toward SHRM Recertification. The revised requirement now focuses only on the number of hours dedicated to a PDC-qualifying work project in the "Advance Your Organization" category and eliminates the stipulation of a minimum duration for the project.

One More Way to Earn PDCs

Remember, your annual National SHRM Membership qualifies for three (3) PDCs per year (and SHRM automatically loads this in your SHRM Portal).

Monthly SHRM Recertification Live Chats

If you are a SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credential-holder, join SHRM to ask the SHRM Recertification Counselors any questions you have about SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP recertification - regardless of where you are in your recertification cycle.
