We stand in solidarity in the fight for social justice and racial equality

Dear Members of IndySHRM,

As our nation struggles to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to bear witness to the reality that systemic racism and injustice pervade our society. Recent events of social injustice in the Black community and around the United States – including but not limited to the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor – are shedding a much-needed spotlight on deeply rooted issues.

We are heartbroken and outraged by the recent tragedies, and we know that the IndySHRM community shares our concern for the victims’ families, and for those in our community who are most impacted by these hateful acts. As Human Resources professionals, we are the “people-people” of an organization. This notion of being for the people holds HR to an elevated standard. Not only does HR support an organization’s most valuable asset, HR has the power and platform to create change within it. Many of our employees are angry. Many are scared. Many are hurting. As a community, we must strive to move beyond a place of sympathy to empathy, from ‘talking about the problem’ to creating opportunities for real change.

IndySHRM is committed to fighting racism, injustice and inequality by equipping our members with the tools, and resources needed to work through difficult conversations, situations, and scenarios. We certainly do not have all the answers. But we can promise you this:IndySHRM will listen. IndySHRM will work hard. IndySHRM will support you.

  • Host thoughtful conversations within your organization.We challenge you to create a safe space for dialogue within your organization. To help equip you to do so, IndySHRM is pivoting its upcoming Sip & Share event, scheduled for June 16th, to instead be a virtual networking event entitled,“Listening and Learning: Conversations about Social Justice and Racial Equality.”Register for this free event here.
  • Contact your lawmakers.We urge you to reach out to your state representative and senator to let them know you support laws that align with our values of social justice and racial equality.
  • Help every citizen across metro Indianapolis to be counted.Encourage your employees and others in your community to complete the 2020 Census by visitinghttps://2020census.gov/.
  • Encourage your employees and others in your community to vote in November for leaders who are willing to change the landscape in this important area.It is more important than ever for you to continue to make your voice heard by voting and encouraging your employees to do the same.Register to vote in Indiana.

Now is the time for us to reflect on what we can do to make society, including our own community, more just. Learning about each other’s lived experiences; engaging with and supporting colleagues; challenging injustice when we witness it; and, especially, actively listening to each other will truly help us build a climate of inclusion.
