Keep Sharing Your Stories

As difficult as feeling connected can be during the pandemic, prioritizing connectivity is perhaps easier than ever as we all have more time due to canceled activities that normally consume our lives.

Being connected to others allows us to share stories and learn from others. Learn a new technique, explore an almost forgotten idea, and/or try a new endeavor because someone else did and it worked out okay. Hearing stories and sharing our experiences gives us perspective that is priceless and a key to maintaining mental wellness.

In that spirit, I offer three ways for you to share your story and connect in June:

  1. Engage in our virtual programming. Even though we're offering video sessions only through at least June, each program offers virtual networking through breakout Zoom rooms and the chance to discuss on-trend topics with fellow HR professionals. Moreover, our first IndySHRM Sip & Share was an encouraging success... don't miss the next virtual networking event on June 16th when we share ideas about managing employee leave requests during the pandemic.
  2. Listen to the stories of familiar HR thought leaders. SHRM National has a wonderful HR Storytellers series where you may watch short videos with advice from familiar names (and past HR Indiana Conference speakers) like Steve Browne, Karl Ahlrichs, Cy Wakeman, and Libby Sartain.
  3. Make this the year that you share your expertise with our Chapter by applying to the IndySHRM Board of Directors for the 2021-2022 term. Be on the lookout for more details in the coming month. We'll be seeking candidates for
  • President Elect
  • Director of College and Community Relations
  • Director of Diversity & Inclusion
  • Director of Legislative Affairs
  • Director of Workforce Readiness
  • Director of Volunteer Engagement

Enjoy the start of your summer and go create some new, joyful stories!

Be safe and well,

Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP

UPDATED – REQUIREMENT CHANGE for PDC-Qualifying Work Projects

The COVID-19 crisis, during which HR professionals are tackling unprecedented challenges on short notice, has prompted SHRM to change the time frame requirement for work projects that qualify for professional development credits (PDCs) toward SHRM Recertification. The revised requirement now focuses only on the number of hours dedicated to a PDC-qualifying work project in the "Advance Your Organization" category and eliminates the stipulation of a minimum duration for the project.

One More Way to Earn PDCs

Remember, your annual National SHRM Membership qualifies for three (3) PDCs per year (and SHRM automatically loads this in your SHRM Portal).

Earn PDCs – SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program

Looking for another way to earn PDCs – check out the SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program – it is FREE and open to all HR professionals who are interested in learning about best practices to attract, hire and retain veterans. Anyone holding the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential may also receive 10 PDCs toward their recertification

SHRM Specialty Credentials – There Are Six (6) Currently

SHRM Specialty Credential educates individuals on specific learning objectives. This is done by participating in a series of learning events and passing an assessment to demonstrate comprehension of program learning objectives. You cannot recertify a specialty credential; after three (3) years, you must complete the learning events and pass the assessment to earn a new credential. Please spread the word and you are encouraged to obtain a SHRM Specialty Credential (and share with your team and/or network) in:

  • SHRM California Law HR Specialty
  • SHRM Talent Acquisition Specialty
  • SHRM People Analytics Specialty
  • SHRM U.S. Employment Immigration Specialty
  • SHRM HR Department of One Specialty
  • SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture
