Making Chapter Member Connectivity Easier

IndySHRM has been using a new software platform to manage our website, event registration and membership renewal for over a year now. However, we haven't yet leveraged all the connectivity capabilities of our portal. With so many options for communicating with people these days, I understand that we must reduce friction to encourage members to utilize the portal.

That starts with showing you how easy it is to use the platform to do things like

  • connect with other IndySHRM members,
  • participate in topic-specific discussion threads,
  • track event registrations, and
  • manage membership renewal.

And by the way, did you know there is a mobile app, too? It's called SocialLink and you can find out how to navigate both the desktop and mobile versions of the IndySHRM membership platform in my tutorial video below.

Jeannie Ambler, Director of Sponsorship

Amber Graves

Amber is a strategic recruiter with experience supporting multiple clients around Indianapolis. She began her career as a temp recruiter with That's Good HR and has served as a recruiting lead then as a division manager driving change to keep up with the tight labor market. Amber implemented tracking and reporting to verify the best talent sources and increased resources to those, overall improving the quality of hires. Amber loves recruiting and the constant challenge it brings.

Amber believes that we should "Be the change you wish to see in the world." She also believes that we should be comfortable being uncomfortable and we need to step out of our comfort zone and grow our circle of influence.

How long have you been involved in Indy SHRM?

Amber has been an active member of Indy SHRM since 2016 and has served on the Programs Committee. Amber was the co-chair for the Indy SHRM north meeting where she was instrumental in delivering great programs for our members.

Why do you think it is important for HR professionals to join Indy SHRM?

Amber feels that it is important for HR professionals to have like-minded people that they can connect with and reach out to ask questions. Amber also feels that it is important for the HR department of one or small HR teams to have access to other HR leaders outside of their company.

What is your favorite pass-time? Amber enjoys attending concerts and her favorite concert was Billy Joel and Elton John. Amber also enjoys spending time with family and attending her kids' sporting events.

IndySHRM Student Conference Recap

There was no better way to spend a Sunday than meeting and learning alongside some of the brightest HR students in Indiana! On Sunday, February 23rd we hosted over 60 students at the 5th annual IndySHRM student conference hosted at IUPUI.

This conference wouldn’t be possible without the support of HR Indiana and volunteers.

JAG/IndySHRM Partnership

Indianapolis Metropolitan High School's Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) students hosted IndySHRM's Board President Jessica Stephenson February 12th for a talk about critical career, employability, and workplace readiness skills.

Students heard about the power of professional networking, career preparation, leadership development, and responsible use of social media. Within the JAG model, these promising high school juniors & seniors regularly engage in structured readiness activities to best equip themselves for high school graduation, college & career.

SHRM Certification – Spring Testing Window May 1 – July 15, 2020

SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) exam applications will begin being accepted January 6 through March 20 (or applicants can pay a $75 late application fee for applications received between March 21 - April 10) for the May 1 – July 15, 2020 testing window

FYI, students enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s HR degree program at an educational institution aligned to SHRM’s curriculum guidelines are eligible to apply for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam.

2020 SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP) Scholarships

The SHRM Foundation will award 220 Certification Scholarships. The next deadline is April 15, 2020 and each scholarship is $750 for SHRM Certification exam and/or preparation (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP)!

Now Accepting Applications – 5th annual Barnes & Thornburg/Ken Yerkes Scholarships for HR Professionals

The HR Indiana Annual Conference announces the 5th annual Barnes & Thornburg/Ken Yerkes Scholarships. These are needs-based scholarships that will be awarded by HR Indiana and Barnes & Thornburg. There are two scholarships that will be awarded:

The application deadline for the Barnes & Thornburg/Ken Yerkes Certification Scholarship is June 30, 2020 (awarded at the Indiana Annual Conference in August).


SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program

Looking for another way to earn PDCs – check out the SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program – it is FREE and open to all HR professionals who are interested in learning about best practices to attract, hire and retain veterans. Anyone holding the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential may also receive 10 PDCs toward their recertification.


SHRM Specialty Credentials – There Are Six (6) Currently

A SHRM Specialty Credential educates individuals on specific learning objectives. This is done by participating in a series of learning events and passing an assessment to demonstrate comprehension of program learning objectives. You cannot recertify a specialty credential; after three (3) years, you must complete the learning events and pass the assessment to earn a new credential. Please spread the word and encourage your members and network to obtain a SHRM Specialty Credential in:

  • SHRM California Law HR Specialty
  • SHRM Talent Acquisition Specialty
  • SHRM People Analytics Specialty
  • SHRM U.S. Employment Immigration Specialty
  • SHRM HR Department of One Specialty
  • SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture

Now In Effect: Policy Changes To SHRM Recertification

SHRM formally announced via email several enhancements to the SHRM Recertification process for those with an existing SHRM Certification. A brief recap:

  • Earn PDCs During the Grace Period, effective August 1, 2019. SHRM Certification holders who are working toward recertification can earn PDCs for activities they participate in through their grace period (the 60-day period between their certification end date and expiration date).
  • Immediately begin earning PDCs for the new recertification cycle when you recertify early, effective August 1, 2019. The new recertification cycle for SHRM Certification holders who recertify early will begin the next day after they recertify. Their end date will continue to be on the last day of their birth month.
  • Carry over a maximum of 20 credits to the next recertification cycle, effective August 1, 2019. SHRM Certification holders who recertify with more than 60 PDCs in their account will be able to carry over up to 20 credits to their new cycle.
