Greetings, IndySHRM!

Your Board of Directors is working hard to implement our new "back to basics" strategic planning tactics (listed below) that I alluded to in last month's newsletter. With each tactic, we have one or more board members assigned as owner, and you should start seeing changes in many of these areas soon!

Bench Strength

  • Develop Director-Elect positions for Membership and Programs Committees
  • Regular check-in huddles between Executive Team and Board of Directors members
  • Monthly Board of Directors member spotlights

Programming Excellence

  • Promote HR competency groups in online membership platform
  • Amplify job posting opportunities
  • Utilize more sponsored ads in social media
  • Better communicate short term volunteer opportunities
  • Distribute new member welcome cards signed by Board of Directors members
  • Better engage chapter members with infrequent attendance
  • Consistently incorporate 30 minutes of socializing at the start of programs
  • Create raffle for a free program for a friend
  • Monthly member and partner spotlights
  • Further promote IndySHRM online presence on digital platforms

Community Outreach & Social Events

  • Coordinate community philanthropic opportunities for members
  • Assemble team for 5K community walk/run

Board of Directors Spotlight

Gerald Bush, VP of Membership

Gerald Bush, SHRM-CP, is IndySHRM's new Vice President of Membership for 2020-2021. Prior to joining the Board, he served on the Communications Committee. I'm excited about the passion that Gerald is already bringing to his new role, as he's making it a priority to connect with all of the committee chairpeople and regularly attend a number of IndySHRM programs.

Gerald had the opportunity to attend this past November's SHRM National Volunteer Leader Business Meeting (VLBM)--to connect with other chapter leaders around the country, as well as learn about the latest chapter membership initiatives. I can already tell that Gerald has a passion for using data to drive decisions, and I look forward to the perspective his experience will bring to member attraction, onboarding and engagement.

Registration is Open for IndySHRM SHRM Certification Study Group

SHRM Certification – Spring Testing Window May 1 – July 15, 2020

SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) exam applications will begin being accepted January 6 through March 20 (or applicants can pay a $75 late application fee for applications received between March 21 - April 10) for the May 1 – July 15, 2020 testing window

FYI, students enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s HR degree program at an educational institution aligned to SHRM’s curriculum guidelines are eligible to apply for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam.

2020 SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP) Scholarships

The SHRM Foundation will award 220 Certification Scholarships. The next deadline is April 15, 2020 and each scholarship is $750 for SHRM Certification exam and/or preparation (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP)!

Now Accepting Applications – 5th annual Barnes & Thornburg/Ken Yerkes Scholarships for HR Professionals

The HR Indiana Annual Conference announces the 5th annual Barnes & Thornburg/Ken Yerkes Scholarships. These are needs-based scholarships that will be awarded by HR Indiana and Barnes & Thornburg. There are two scholarships that will be awarded:

The application deadline for the Barnes & Thornburg/Ken Yerkes Certification Scholarship is June 30, 2020 (awarded at the Indiana Annual Conference in August).


SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program

Looking for another way to earn PDCs – check out the SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program – it is FREE and open to all HR professionals who are interested in learning about best practices to attract, hire and retain veterans. Anyone holding the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential may also receive 10 PDCs toward their recertification.


SHRM Specialty Credentials – There Are Six (6) Currently

A SHRM Specialty Credential educates individuals on specific learning objectives. This is done by participating in a series of learning events and passing an assessment to demonstrate comprehension of program learning objectives. You cannot recertify a specialty credential; after three (3) years, you must complete the learning events and pass the assessment to earn a new credential. Please spread the word and encourage your members and network to obtain a SHRM Specialty Credential in:

  • SHRM California Law HR Specialty
  • SHRM Talent Acquisition Specialty
  • SHRM People Analytics Specialty
  • SHRM U.S. Employment Immigration Specialty
  • SHRM HR Department of One Specialty
  • SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture

Now In Effect: Policy Changes To SHRM Recertification

SHRM formally announced via email several enhancements to the SHRM Recertification process for those with an existing SHRM Certification. A brief recap:

  • Earn PDCs During the Grace Period, effective August 1, 2019. SHRM Certification holders who are working toward recertification can earn PDCs for activities they participate in through their grace period (the 60-day period between their certification end date and expiration date).
  • Immediately begin earning PDCs for the new recertification cycle when you recertify early, effective August 1, 2019. The new recertification cycle for SHRM Certification holders who recertify early will begin the next day after they recertify. Their end date will continue to be on the last day of their birth month.
  • Carry over a maximum of 20 credits to the next recertification cycle, effective August 1, 2019. SHRM Certification holders who recertify with more than 60 PDCs in their account will be able to carry over up to 20 credits to their new cycle.
