November 2019

President's Pen

By Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP

A Season for Gratitude

November is an easy time of year to remember to give thanks. With the holiday season approaching and all the associated festivities, we don't have to try that hard to show gratitude when things are going well. However, I challenge us all to strengthen our gratitude practice year round.

The privilege to show gratitude to others has never been more clear for me than now... as I sit in the ICU with my husband as he recovers from a challenging life event. I am humbled and overwhelmed by the numerous demonstrations of support we have received from family and friends... and both his and my co-workers.

Empathy in the workplace is worth serious conversation, as the degree to which it is championed varies significantly from one organization to the next. When was the last time you considered how "human" your company's human resources efforts are when it comes to assisting teammates with challenging life circumstances?

From simple gestures such as clearing a co-worker's calendar on his behalf when he is called away to care for a loved one, to delivering a care package to get a teammate through hard times... these easy to execute gestures cut through the stress and anxiety experienced by your impacted co-worker and help him persevere.

In this season of Thanksgiving, let's re-examine what we're doing in the workplace to empathize with our employees' life circumstances and lift them up when they need support.

Have a wonderful month!
