July 2019

President's Pen

By Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP

Greetings IndySHRM, welcome to summer! This month, I'd like to call your attention to a number of opportunities to think outside the box and push yourself to learn and develop in new ways.

Creating Better Workplaces

I recently attended the National SHRM Conference and was energized by the event's emphasis on how creating better workplaces creates a better world. The conference programming challenged attendees to build inclusive work environments in order to create better workplaces. SHRM wants us to rethink our definition of what the "wrong candidate" looks like.

SHRM CEO and president Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. asked us to "put our bias to the back and look at the people who are different." In particular, he mentioned individuals with criminal records, those with disabilities, returning veterans and older adults.

Apply for the IndySHRM Board of Directors by July 31st

We're seeking candidates for

VP of Membership

Volunteer at the HR Indiana Conference, Aug. 12-14

If you're already planning on attending this year's HR Indiana Conference, from Aug. 12-14, then please consider volunteering for a session or two while you attend. It's a great networking opportunity, as well as chance to give back to the profession and your organization. In fact, IndySHRM earns a revenue share for every chapter member attending the conference who volunteers. Conference volunteers also have special VIP access to the volunteer lounge with snacks and refreshments, as well as a volunteer gift.

You may register for one or more volunteer sessions at this link.

NOTE: You must be registered to attend the conference in order to be qualified to volunteer.

Have a fantastic month!

Warm Regards,
Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP

Track your recertification credits with the SHRM Certification App

With the certification app, available for iOS and Android devices, SHRM credential holders can search and filter recertification activities by competency, date or location; keep track of them; and enter the appropriate PDCs! The app automatically uploads the PDCs you’ve obtained from National SHRM conferences, SHRM eLearning, and SHRM seminars etc. into your profile. The app will also notify you when you are ready to apply for SHRM Recertification!

The email address in your SHRM Recertification Portal must match the email address in your National SHRM Membership account for it to link up.
