President's Pen

By Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP

Serving Your Community and Profession

I recently met with HR leaders from around Indiana at the HR Indiana SHRM Volunteer Leader Summit (VLS). This annual event, comprised of chapter board members from around the state, always reinvigorates my connection with our national organization, SHRM.

Along with the chance to network and brainstorm with like-minded professionals, the VLS allows us to connect and discuss the latest SHRM resources and opportunities. There are two new SHRM resources I'd like to draw to your attention, specifically:

Veterans at Work Certificate Program

The Veterans at Work Certificate, developed for HR professionals, hiring managers, and front-line supervisors, is a multi-faceted program from the SHRM Foundation and brought to you with generous support from Comcast NBCUniversal. Through this FREE certificate program you will:

  • Learn the value that skilled veterans bring to the civilian workplace
  • Demonstrate your commitment to attract, hire and retain these talented professionals
  • Earn 10 professional development credits toward your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recertification

Learn more about the certificate here.

Getting Talent Back to Work Toolkit

The Getting Talent Back to Work initiative is led by SHRM, in partnership with Koch Industries, to end outdated, non-inclusive hiring practices. In response to the First Step Act becoming law, the movement is the next step to getting those with criminal histories a fair chance at employment.

The Toolkit empowers business and HR leaders to confidently evaluate applicants with criminal records by equipping them with the latest research, evidence-based best practices and industry guidance needed to reduce legal liability and increase inclusive hiring from this untapped talent pool.

Learn more about the Toolkit and an employer pledge here.

Not only do these resources help us better support a broader cross-section of our own community members, but they also make good business sense as our organizations compete to attract and retain engaged and high-performing talent, too.

Warm Regards,

Jessica Stephenson, SHRM-CP
