The Starfish Initiative is a partner organization of IndySHRM and we support their mission to inspire, encourage, and prepare promising economically disadvantaged students for college and career success.

To achieve this goal, Starfish pairs economically disadvantaged high school students one-on-one with college-educated mentors.  Starfish Initiative believes that mentoring is the key to improving the educational attainment and future of today’s youth.  Working to fill empty caps and gowns and enhancing our workforce of tomorrow.

Starfish has had a huge impact on the 900 kids who have become “Starfish Scholars” since 2003:

  • 100% graduate from high school
  • 98% go directly to college (vs. 75% of similar students not in the Starfish program)
  • 74% will graduate from college (vs. 40% of similar students not in the Starfish program)

Starfish is currently in the peak of Mentor Recruitment, with 125 incoming freshmen waiting to be matched in July. That said, Starfish’s biggest need right now is qualified Mentors – caring adults who can offer their time and talent to these kids with big dreams but many unanswered questions.
