The war for talent has persisted and pools of talent for employers to steadily draw upon have become far and few between. This panel discussion assembles expert voices who have utilized work-based learning, internship and apprenticeship solutions; solutions that help employers proactively “home grow” talent and thus, their own talent pipeline. The panel will reference their own experiences and tackle difficult questions from the moderator and audience on the subject.

Kofi has more than 15 years experience in education, primarily in an early childhood, coupled with a few years of leading workforce development efforts. He has worked extensively along the I-65 corridor with the majority of his time spent in Louisville and Indianapolis.

Prior to OneAmerica, Shawn worked in a variety of industries in similar talent acquisition roles with
organizations including Newell Brands, Comcast, Anthem and Roche Diagnostics.
Shawn earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Information Systems from Indiana Wesleyan
Sarah joined Conexus Indiana in August of 2017.Previously her role focused on the management and support of relationships with schools offering the Hire Tech curriculum in southern Indiana. Now her main focus is on Post-Secondary Education. Sarah develops and supports strategic regional partnerships between industry, education and the public sector, as well as the promotion of the Conexus Programs and other talent initiatives and events.
Prior to joining Conexus, Sarah has held a variety of positions including Business Development, the Director of Admissions at the International School of Indiana, and the Senior Trainer, at Eli Lilly UK.
Sarah is English, graduated in Leeds, U.K. and has worked in Toronto, Canada, as well as now here in the USA. Sarah has three children, a dog and she participates in several initiatives that support women. While in the UK she was a Combat Medical Technician in a Field Hospital with the Army Reserves.
Courtney Thomas currently serves as the KIPP Through College Manager with KIPP Indy Public Schools. She is a Licensed K-12 School Counselor who is passionate about helping prepare all students with the knowledge, skills and mindsets necessary to matriculate to and through college, and ultimately live a life of choice. Courtney is from Indianapolis. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from DePauw University and her Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Indiana University. Courtney has many years of experience in college and career counseling. In her previous role with the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Program she served as the College and Career Coordinator for underrepresented juniors and seniors at Arlington, Arsenal Tech, Ben Davis, Indy Met and George Washington High School. In that role, she worked with students in successful high school completion, college planning, college applications, completing 21st Century Scholars ScholarTrack activities, college visits, and FAFSA completion. In addition, she helped coordinate student internships in various industries. For Courtney, the most rewarding part of this work is when students realize, and get excited about, the importance of an education beyond high school in accomplishing their dreams. Outside of work Courtney enjoys working out, reading and spending time with family. Courtney is beyond excited to continue her work with KIPP students and families and serving the Martindale-Brightwood community.
Deborah recently joined Versiti – Indiana Blood Center as Manager, Human Resources Business Partner. Deborah’s experience spans over 20 years and her background encompasses a variety of industry experiences where she has been involved in almost all aspects of HR. Deborah has worked in the areas of insurance, technology, start-up, warehousing and distribution, and consulting.
Deborah has an extensive HR background in strategic and tactical planning, performance management, employee relations, engagement, coaching and succession planning. As a Human Resources professional, Deborah has a passion for people with a collaborative approach in developing teams and solving problems.
Deborah is a native Hoosier and a graduate from Oral Roberts University. Deborah is married with 2 young adult children and in her spare time enjoys spending time with family, friends and traveling.
Chuck began in his role at Gaylor in July 2018; where he leads the Workforce Management team made
up of Resource Ambassadors who support craft employees with career path development. He is also
very involved in workforce development issues and initiatives in the community, serving on the Board of
Directors for Hamilton County Workforce Innovation Network, Hamilton County 21 st Century Talent
Regions leadership team, and Co-Chair of the Comprehensive Workforce & Economic Development
Committee for the City of Noblesville.
Chuck also served 8 years in the United States Marine Corps as a Combat Engineer. During his service, he
traveled the world over 3 deployments and discovered his passion for service, leadership and
performance. After the Corps, Chuck received his B.S. in Organizational Leadership and Supervision from
IUPUI and a M.P.S in Organization Development and Change at Penn State.
Outside of work, Chuck serves as the President of the Association for Talent Development-Central
Indiana Chapter. ATD is a non-profit organization for professionals who help others achieve their full
potential by improving their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the workplace. He is also involved in Team
RWB, a veterans service organization, focused on supporting veterans through fellowship and physical
He currently lives in Noblesville, IN with his wife, Kari, daughter, Paige, and son, Connor; they love being
outside as often as possible, especially with friends and family. Chuck is an Elite Yelper, so he’s always
looking for a cool restaurant or bar, a new place to hit the trails for a run, or other hidden gems to write
