The IndySHRM Workforce Readiness Committee partnered with Training, Inc. to host the second event in a three-part series entitled “Social Media Circuit Training” on October 26, 2011. As the title implies, the event format was modeled after a training circuit and the three circuits focused on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Current Training, Inc. trainees and program alumni were divided into groups and paired with social media enthusiast volunteers.

Because trainees’ level of expertise with these three social networking sites varied widely, the small group format really allowed our volunteers to customize each circuit to the needs of the individuals. Material covered included everything from how to connect with other individuals on these sites, what types of material should be included in one’s profile, meaningful content for status updates, and how to look for jobs using the tools available with social networking sites.

A very special thanks go to the following volunteers:

The Facebook Volunteers:

Matt Cooper, Digital Marketing Manager – Pacers Sports & Entertainment

Mandy Laird, Human Resources Specialist – City Securities

Marty Thompson, Founder & President – Two Bananas Marketing

Dawn Charbonneau, Community Liaison – Training, Inc.

The Twitter Volunteers:

Tracy Morgan, Human Resources Coordinator – Slingshot SEO

Chuck Gose, Co-Founder and Co-Host – Indianapolis Social Media; Director, Digital Signage Business Development & Social Media – The MediaTile Company

Douglas Karr, CEO – DK New Media; Founder – Marketing Technology Blog

The LinkedIn Volunteers:

Joellyn Detjen, Marketing Manager – FlashPoint

Angela Lee, Director of Human Resources/Payroll – Pacers Sports & Entertainment

Jessica Stephenson, Director of Client Services – ExactHire

Also, an extra special thanks to Workforce Readiness Committee members, Cindy Gosser and Denver Hutt who helped to put the event together!

The trainee population of Training, Inc. currently is represented by about 30% transitioning veterans, and 70% under- or unemployed individuals. Many clients are referred to Training, Inc. for services from other organizations. Many of the attendees are working on improving their computer literacy and some are relatively new to the idea of social networking.

We hope that the success of this event will lead to future events with other non-profit organizations to explore the art of social networking and online “personal brand” management. If you are interested in contributing to future events, please contact Jessica Stephenson.
