If earning your PHR or SPHR designation is one of your goals within the next year or two then you need to be aware of the changes in the eligibility requirements that are coming in 2011.

The current requirements are two years of demonstrated, professional, exempt-level work experience for either the PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or the SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources).  The two years of experience do not have to be concurrent or recent.  If you meet these requirements, you are eligible to sit for the exam this winter, in the Dec 2010-Jan 2011 testing session.

After this winter’s session, there are new eligibility requirements, which are a combination of years of professional experience and education.

The new eligibility requirements are as follows:

PHR

1 year of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Masters Degree or higher

2 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Bachelors Degree

4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s Degree

SPHR

4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Masters Degree or higher

5 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Bachelors Degree

7 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with less than a Bachelors Degree

HRCI changed the eligibility requirements after surveying over 14,000 business leaders, HR professionals, students and academics.  The new requirements reflect the changing requirements of the HR professional today.
